🪨 Edakkal Caves – The Ancient Wonder of Wayanad
Edakkal Caves are one of the most famous tourist attractions in Wayanad, Kerala, located about 25 km from Kalpetta. These natural caves are found on Ambukuthi Hills, at an altitude of around 1,200 meters above sea level.
The name “Edakkal” means “a stone in between” in Malayalam — because the caves were formed when a huge rock got wedged between two bigger rocks, creating a natural shelter.
What makes Edakkal truly special is the prehistoric carvings and engravings on the cave walls. These ancient drawings are believed to be over 6,000 years old, dating back to the Neolithic Age (Stone Age). The carvings include human figures, animals, symbols, and scripts, giving a rare glimpse into early human civilization in South India.
To reach the caves, visitors must trek about 1.5 km uphill, making it a small adventure with rewarding panoramic views of the Wayanad valleys.
