Banasura Sagar Dam, which impounds the Karamanathodu tributary of the Kabini River, is part of the Indian Banasurasagar Project consisting of a dam and a canal project started in 1979.
Best time to visit: October to March, when the reservoir is full and the surrounding hills are green.
Banasura Sagar Dam is one of the largest earthen dams in India, built as part of the Banasurasagar Project in the 1970s. The reservoir is dotted with tiny islands formed by submerged hilltops, and motorised and paddle boats offer rides across the water. The view of the Banasura hills from the dam wall is one of the highlights of a visit.
