Edakkal Caves

Edakkal Caves

Distance from Kalpetta: 20 km

Edakkal Caves are two natural caves at a remote location at Edakkal, 25 km from Kalpetta in the Wayanad district of Kerala in India’s Western Ghats.

Best time to visit: October to May. Carry comfortable shoes for the climb up to the caves.

The two chambers of Edakkal Caves are part of a natural rock shelter on Ambukuthi Mala. The walls hold some of the oldest petroglyphs found in South India, with carvings that date back thousands of years, and the caves are an important archaeological site. Reaching the entrance involves a short uphill walk through the forest, and the views across the hills from the top are superb.
